$135,000 Structure to Be Formally Dedicated At Program January 15

A $135,000 elementary school and gymnasium at Metz will be dedicated Jan. 15 at 8 p.m.

The school, which serves the educational needs of residents within a 120-square mile area, is a long cry from the tiny one-room school which boasted of two teachers in the early days of the town.

Now five buses are used to carry students to school and 12 teachers and a school superintendent are on hand to give instruction.

There are 185 students in the Metz grade school and 65 in high school.

In a step toward the new building, the Metz school was consolidated with 10 other rural schools in 1916 and in 1923 the building now being used was constructed.  Eleven more rural schools were consolidated into the system in 1951.

In 1953 the district voted a $110,000 bond issue and the state gave $25,000 for the construction of the new school.

Events on the dedication program include the high school band playing the "Star Spangled Banner," invocation by the Rev. Cecil Todd, "Bless This House" by the school chorus, and outline of events following the school system reorganization, and financing the building by Marvin Forkner, member of the School Board.

An address by George Englehart, director of school building services for the State Department of Education; an address by W. J. Willette, state school supervisor; introduction of platform guests by Elgie Sivils, superintendent of schools; "God Bless America" by the school band; "Blest Be the Tie" by the school quartet, and benediction by the Rev. Rahkof.

The public [is] invited to attend next Friday night's program and tour the new house of learning.  The new structure is hailed as one of the finest in the area.
