Use the "Search Digital Newspapers" button.  Not all local papers or all issues are available, but many older issues are. Papers are searchable by key-word, date, and location. The following papers, from Metz and Nevada, are available for Vernon County and neighboring counties as listed. Recommend using the county and state in searches to include each paper listed in a county. Some papers only have intermittent years and/or issues. Many issues of Nevada, MO newspapers are available free at Google News. Papers may not be easily searchable by key-word but can be browsed by date. If no issue shows for the day needed, begin with the link of the previous issue--often several issues are included at one link. In the early 1900s many articles have been obliterated due to copyright issues. Issues are sometimes out of date order, and some issues are missing.
