Richard T. Whitley

(Proprietor of Montevallo Hotel).

   One of the most favorably known institutions of the kind in this county is the hotel at Montevallo, conducted by the subject of this sketch—a house which would do credit to towns of much larger size.  Mr. Whitley is a success as a landlord, and has put his present hostelry on a popular basis.  He is a native of Harrison county, Ky., born January 20, 1833.  His parents, James Whitley and Phebe Whitley, nee Haley, were both Kentuckians by birth, and had a family of three children of whom Richard was the eldest.  He was reared to an agricultural experience, the calling which his father followed, and in connection with this learned also the details of stock raising, the principal part of his early life being passed in Macon county, Ill, to which locality he had accompanied his parents from Kentucky.  In 1872 he left Illinois, settled in Vernon county, Mo., and has since remained here, actively engaged in business.  Up to 1885 he lived in Nevada, but since then his attention has been directed to his present business at this place.  In his efforts Mr. Whitley is ably assisted by his worthy wife, a lady of wide esteem, to whose aid is largely due the popularity of the Montevallo Hotel.  Any one who complains of the treatment at this house deserves to be put on short rations.  Miss Margaret A. Edwards became Mr. W.’s wife in 1863.  She was born in Macon county, Ill., the daughter of James Edwards, formerly from North Carolina.  They have three children:  Alice E., Jamie and Katie.
