ARCHIBALD G. WHITE

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 701:

Archibald G. White

(Nevada).

On another page of this volume deserving mention has been made of the father of the subject of this sketch, Dr. James White, and a repetition of what there appears may not be inappropriate in this connection.  A native of Orange county, N. Y., where he was born in 1808, he moved to Columbus, O., when a young man, and later to Illinois, finally in 1840 settling in Vernon county, Mo., south of Nevada, where he began his professional practice.  This he continued until his death, July 4, 1876, in the meantime, however, having once served as presiding county judge.  His first wife, Miss Nancy Blaine, bore him six children, two of whom, Henry and Archibald, are now living; and after her death he married a Mrs. Godfrey, who died in 1861, leaving three children: Nancy J., wife of Harvey Rathbun; Anna, Mrs. John F. Aitken; and Eliza A., wife of Sylvester German.  His third wife was the widow of A. G. Hale.  Archibald, the youngest child now living by his father’s first marriage, is a native of Vernon county, born June 30, 1850.  Up to within the last three or four years his attention has been in the direction of agricultural pursuits, the calling to which he was reared, and for two years of the period mentioned he discharged the duties of deputy sheriff of the county in an acceptable manner.  August 25, 1870, Mr. White was married to Miss Emma Baker, one of Vernon’s daughters, whose father, August Baker, was so foully murdered during the war.  Reference to this horrible crime appears elsewhere.  Five children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. White: Augustus, James, Lloyd, Milo and Rosa, besides one who is deceased, Lelia Ellen.  Mr. W. is a member of the K. of P.
