ISAAC WELCH

Isaac Welch, Grandfather of  J. W. 'Bill' Williams

Isaac Welch was born in North Carolina in 1820.  By the 1850 (November) Census, Isaac Welch, a single man, was working and living in the Parish of Avoyelles in the county of New Orleans, Louisiana, as a wood chopper.  In 1850-1851, Isaac married Mary Richison who was born about 1818-1820 in Kentucky.  Isaac and Mary’s firstborn, William Ellwood Welch, was born in New Orleans in February 1852.  The Welch family moved to Missouri sometime after February 1852 and prior to 1854 where six daughters were then born.

1.  William Ellwood Welch:  born Feb. 1852 in New Orleans.

2.  Lisaudy(?) Welch:  born 1854 in Missouri.

3.  Margaret Welch:  born 1856 in Missouri.

4.  Evaline/Emaline Welch:  born 1857 in Missouri.

5.  Mary M. (Mollie) Welch:  born 1859 in Missouri.  Married W. J. (or W. W.) Williams.  Their children:

a.  Bessie Williams:  born March 1886 in Springtown, Texas

b.  J. W., aka William, 'Bill,' Jake:  born Nov. 17, 1887, in Springtown, Texas

6.  E. B. Welch:  born 1861 in Missouri.

7.  Martha Welch:  born 1863 in Missouri.

In the 1860 Federal Census, the Welch (Welsh) family lived in Buchanan County, Missouri.

In the 1870 Census, the Isaac Welch family lived in Henry Township, Vernon County, Missouri.

By the 1880 Census, the Welch (Welsh) family had moved to Springtown, Parker County, Texas, and Isaac, Martha, Margaret, and Lisourdy were not listed in the household.

It is not known if Isaac died in Missouri or went to Texas with the family and died there prior to the 1880 Census.  He is not listed in the online Vernon County, Missouri Probate Index and have not been able to locate a death in Missouri or Texas.  Mary was listed as head of household.

It is also not known whether Lisaurdy, age 26; Margaret, age 24; and Martha who would have been 16 were married by 1880 and not in the Welch household, or whether they had died either in Missouri or Texas.

Mary M. (Mollie) Welch and W. J. (or W.W.) Williams were married in Springtown, Texas on June, 6, 1883.  A daughter by the name of Bessie was born in March 1886.  A son, J. W. 'Bill' was born in Springtown, Texas on November 17, 1887.  By the 1900 census, both Bessie, age 14, and Bill, age 12, were living with Mollie’s brother, William Ellwood Welch and his family in Springtown Texas.

Without an 1890 Federal Census, we don’t know if Mollie and W. J. were still living at that time or not.  Apparently, they both died sometime after the birth of Bill in 1887 and before the Census of 1900.  Nothing is known about W. J. (Bill and Bessie’s father) other than he was born in North Carolina.

Around 1905, Mollie’s brother, William Ellwood Welch and family moved to Harmon County, Oklahoma with Bill but am unsure if Bessie went with them or stayed in Springtown. There is a marriage certificate from Greer County of “Bessie Williams” from Shrewder (that is the tiny community the Welch’s moved to) and a Steve Miller.  The marriage is January 30, 1905.  There also is a grave in the Shrewder cemetery of Bessie Williams (not Miller), no dates.

J. W. Williams married Pearl Dixon in June 1910 (both of Shrewder) in Harmon County, Oklahoma.
