Personal popularity and the respect and esteem of his many acquaintances it is the good fortune of Mr. Vetter to enjoy, and he is worthy to retain such regard.  Of German birth and parentage, he has in him native characteristic of thrift, industry and economy which go a great ways in establishing one's self substantially in life.  Mr. Vetter's birth occurred in Germany December 6, 1836, his parents, Joseph and Mary Kurtz, being natives of that same country.  He determined to come to the United States when still a boy, and so in 1850 crossed the ocean and located at Louisville, Ky., there learning the details of an agricultural life in connection with the more particular branch of gardening.  After leaving Louisville he moved to Indiana, but a short time sufficed him there and he returned to Louisville, owing to war troubles which then enveloped the entire country.  While at this point he was employed by the Government in the horse department for some time.  Following the close of the war he went to Coles county, Ill., from which locality he came to this county in 1869.  Here he has since remained and his enterprise and industry are now seen in his comfortable place of 323 acres of well improved and splendidly managed land.  May 6, 1860, Mr. Vetter was married to Miss Mary Legler, also of German nativity.  They have nine children:  Joe, Charles, Lena, Lydia E., Flora, William H., Frank, Arch and Emmet.  Mr. V. is a member of the A.
