DR. JOSEPH D. TODD

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 759-760:

Dr. Joseph D. Todd

(Farmer, and Physician and Surgeon, Section 2, Post-office, Nevada).

One of the first families to locate within the boundaries of Missouri was that of which the subject of this sketch is a worthy representative.  His father, Thomas D. Todd, was a native of the Blue Grass State, his mother's birth occurring in Boone county, Mo.  Her maiden name was Miss Chloe Helm, and she bore her husband three children:  Joseph and William C. are living, and Thomas A. is deceased.  Thomas D. Todd was an agriculturist by calling, and when young Joseph was but a small youth he located in Howard county, his birth having occurred September 1, 1843, in Buchanan county.  There the boy was made familiar with the duties of farm life, but afterwards he carried out a desire long entertained to enter upon a professional career, and commenced the study of medicine under the preceptorship of Dr. Bailey, of Fayette.  After a thorough preparatory study he attended the Keokuk Medical College, of Keokuk, Iowa, and was graduated from that institution in 1869, following which he embarked upon his professional practice, first in Monroe county, and later in Boone county, where he built up a practice highly complimentary to his ability and skill as a physician.  In 1877, he came to this county, and has since been numbered among the progressive, substantial citizens of the community.  In 1881, to still further perfect himself in his profession, the doctor took a course at the Missouri Medical College, of St. Louis, from which he returned better prepared than before to attend to the calls made upon him in administering to the suffering.  He owns 360 acres of good land, 40 acres of this tract being planted in fruit trees, and other improvements of by no means an inferior nature are found upon his place.  In May, 1872, Dr. Todd was united in marriage with Miss Alice Britt, a native of Boone county, Mo.  They have three children:  Thomas B., Lulu D., and Fred. F.  He belongs to Argyle Lodge, A. F. and A. M. of Nevada.  Dr. T. is a warm supporter of all worthy measures and movements.
