MRS. MARY E. STRAIN

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 898:

Mrs. Mary E. Strain

(Post-office, Nevada).

Among other early settlers in Vernon county referred to in the present volume was Mrs. Strain, whose maiden name was Godfrey, well acquainted hereabouts, but for many years located in Coal township, where she is by no means unknown. Born in Mercer county, Ky., she came to this county with her brother, Leaven Godfrey, as early as 1839. Some years later, or in 1842, she was married to Mr. James Logan, a native of Montgomery county, Mo., and son of Hugh and Sarah (Massey) Logan; his birth occurred May 9, 1819, and in 1837 he settled in Vernon county, living here until his death in 1856. He was the father of the following children: Achilles, Letitia, who married William Profitt; James W., who died in 1852; Sarah Ellen, died in 1857, and Clay B., who survived until 1879. Mrs. Logan remained a widow until 1878, when she was united in marriage with Mr. John C. Strain, originally from Tennessee. He is also deceased, having died in 1880. Mrs. Strain is now living with her daughter, Mrs. Profitt, with whom she finds a welcome and happy home. As one of the county’s pioneer settlers she is accorded wide respect from all who know her. It should have been mentioned that her mother’s maiden name was Ellen Dean, and she was a Kentuckian by birth. Mrs. S.’s maternal grandparents were Leaven and Margaret Dean, née Howell, closely related to the Dean family of our own day. She is the owner of an excellent tract of land, some 270 acres in extent.
