Henry Stegman

(Proprietor of German House, Nevada).

   Mr. Stegman, the owner and proprietor of this well know and popular hostelry is, as his name indicates, of foreign ancestry and birth, having been born in Hanover, Germany, March 17, 1846.  Conrad Stegman, his father, also of the same country, devoted his attention to agricultural pursuits.  When a young man he married Miss Sophia Corte, whose birth likewise occurred there.  They were blessed with a family of 12 children, of whom Henry was the eldest.  The father being a farmer, the son naturally grew up to a knowledge of farm life, an occupation in which he became well versed.  On deciding to emigrate to America he took passage on an ocean steamer, arriving in this country August 25, 1866; his first settlement was at Metropolis, Ill., and there he clerked in a dry goods store for three years, subsequently going to Sedalia, Mo., where he made his home for a year and a half.  From that time on until his location to Nevada, he was a resident of Fort Scott, Kas.  In 1880 Mr. Stegman came to this place and opened the German House, a hotel situated near the depot, and one of established reputation, its popularity being largely due to the personal esteem in which its proprietor is held.  In 1868 Mr. S. was united in marriage with Miss Mary Muller, who was born and reared in the same country as her husband.  Their two children were named Annie and Henry.  Mr. S. is a member of the Knights of Pythias, and a charter member of the A. O. U. W., in which Order he is a Select Knight.
