DR. H. H. SPRAGUE

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 576-577:

Dr. H. H. Sprague

(Section 15, Post-office, Eve).

The name of Dr. Sprague, as well as his person, is familiar to most residents of this county, if not professionally, then as an agriculturist, for he has devoted himself to both farming and the practice of medicine during his residence here, though the latter calling has been almost given up to enable him to better prosecute his labor upon his excellent farm.  Occasionally, however, an importunate one is found, to whose appeal the Doctor responds, rather as a matter of courtesy than practice.  Before settling in this community he enjoyed a lucrative patronage and firmly established himself as a physician of thorough and proficient medical knowledge.  From 1855 until 1872 he was actively engaged in professional practice, a periods of over seventeen years.  Dr. Sprague was born in Muskingum county, O., July 14, 1827, and comes of good old Revolutionary stock, his grandfather, James Sprague, having taken part in the War for Independence, when but sixteen years old.  Samuel Sprague, our subject’s father, was born in Pennsylvania, of Rhode Island ancestry.  In early life he was a stone mason, but afterwards gave his attention to agricultural pursuits.  His wife, formerly Miss Mary Smoot, a native of Ohio, became the mother of eight children, and of those H. H., the third child, grew up to a knowledge of farming and milling.  Subsequently he began the study of medicine under Drs. Linn and Marshall, and finally, as intimated, embarked in active practice in 1855.  In 1872 he became located in Vernon county and here he now owns a farm of 480 acres, unexcelled for general farming purposes.  In 1857 the Doctor’s marriage to Miss Sarah A. Harris was consummated; her native State is Connecticut.  Three children have been born of this union, whose names are Mary A., now Mrs. Emanuel W. Scothorn; Alice E. and Edna Inez.
