JOHN W. SMITH

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 870-871:

John W. Smith

(Retired Farmer, Montevallo).

It was in 1864 that Mr. Smith first became located in Missouri, his settlement at that time being made in Mercer county, from whence he subsequently went to Harrison county, thence to Grundy county, and finally coming to Vernon county, in September, 1874, locating at Avola. Since that time his home has been in Vernon county, and here he has gained a wide and favorable acquaintance. Though the occupation which he has followed in life so successfully has been that of farming, he is now retired from active labor and is living a somewhat retired life, having removed into Montevallo in February, 1887. However, he is a large property holder, owning some 490 acres of land. Mr. Smith is a Tennessean by birth, born in Carter county, and the third of a family of 10 children. John Smith, his father, was also a native of Tennessee, as was his wife, whose maiden name was Nancy Elliott. John W. was reared in Clairborne county, Tenn., but in 1856 left that State to remove to Kentucky, from whence he subsequently removed to Mercer county, Mo. Since then his career has been briefly noted, and it is surely one against which no word of reproach could fall. In 1848 Mr. Smith married Miss Lucinda Ford, originally from Claiborne county, East Tenn. Her parents were George and Elizabeth (Cupp) Ford. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have had a family of 10 children: George A., William A., Thirsey, wife of John Mimms; Lavina J., wife of C. P. Barnes; Margaret E., wife of P. W. Pope; Robert T., Isaac S., James H., Emery H. and David W.
