CLARK SMITH

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 479-480:

Clark Smith

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 12, Post-office, Eldorado Springs).

Though the present landed possessions of Mr. Smith embrace but 40 acres this tract is improved in a manner above the ordinary, but present indications point to an increase in the extent of his estate, which, when obtained, will render his farm one of the desirable ones of this portion of Clear Creek township.  His farming operations are carried on in a manner which others might do well to imitate, for he seeks to obtain the best results possible for the labor bestowed.  His ideas of agricultural pursuits he has brought with him from an agricultural community—Guernsey county, O., where he was born January 21, 1855, the fourth of nine children in the family of his parents, Ellis and Roxaline (McHorney) Smith.  His father was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., March 25, 1821, and his mother’s birth occurred September 5, 1826, in Virginia; they were married in 1848 and had the following children besides Clark:  Samuel B., born in 1849; William A., born in 1851; John R., born in 1853; Steele, born in 1857; Mary R., born in 1860; Ellis, born in 1863; Albert, born in 1865, and Lee, born in 1867.  In 1865 Mr. Smith accompanied other members of the family to Missouri, locating in Deepwater, in Henry county, where they still reside.  But forming a desire to cast his fortunes in some other county he came here in 1881 from St. Clair county, where he had been previously located for a short time.  While in that community Mr. Smith was married, March 4, 1880, to Miss Martha A. Smith, of this State, who was born May 27, 1862.  She was the daughter of Elijah and Frances Smith, nee Peoples, both Tennesseeans (sic) by birth.  They have two children:  Alta Edna, born November 17, 1882, and Alma, born September 18, 1884.  Mr. Smith politically is a Liberal Republican.  He belongs to Eldorado Springs Lodge No. 482, A. F. and A. M.  He is a man of strong temperate and moral habits and in truth a good citizen.  For ten years he has been making and raising sorghum cane, averaging 3,000 gallons of sorghum annually.
