SIMEON SHEARER

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 448:

Simeon Shearer

(Farmer and Mechanic, Section 25, Post-office, Sandstone).

In endeavoring to trace the ancestry of Mr. Shearer it is found that his paternal grandfather was a pioneer settler of the Old Dominion, his birth having occurred near Culpeper Court-House, Va., in 1767.  During life he took part in many of the wars of his time and finally died in 1851, leaving among other children a son, Samuel Shearer, the father of the subject of this sketch.  Samuel Shearer was a Kentuckian by birth, born in Madison county, May 22, 1800.  His active, energetic life has been devoted to agricultural pursuits, and though now retired from daily pursuits he is by no means idle, displaying unusual activity for one of his age.  He still resides upon a farm within three miles of his birthplace.  His wife at the time of his marriage to her was Mrs. Mary E. Arnold, the widow of John Arnold.  She died in March, 1877, at the age of 72 years, dying in the faith of the Baptist Church, to which her husband still belongs.  Ten children blessed their happy married life, and of these Simeon was the eighth child.  His birth occurred in Madison county, Ky., July 18, 1841, and as his father was a farmer he was naturally brought up to that calling.  He also became familiar with the occupation of a mechanic and has done not a little in this line.  After attaining to manhood he was married in 1862 to Miss Sarah E. Stagner, daughter of Albert and Zerelda (Bently) Stagner, also natives of the Blue Grass State; they moved to Missouri in 1870, and now reside in Nevada.  Mr. and Mrs. Shearer are the parents of four children:  Anna V., born May 16, 1867; Edward W., born November 25, 1869; Robert J., born January 21, 1879; and Govan M., born September 16, 1880.  Miss Anna was married in October, 1885 to Emmet Thompson.  During the late war Mr. Shearer entered as a private the command of John Morgan and served under him in the engagements of Gallatin, Tenn., Green River, and numerous others of minor importance, receiving an honorable discharge in 1864.  Since the war he has attended closely to his adopted calling with every evidence of success.  His personal interests are often made to subserve the public good, and in this way he has become well and favorably known.  Himself and wife belong to the Baptist Church, and Mr. S. is a member of the I.O.O.F. at Nevada.
