JAMES H. ROWAN

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 758:

James H. Rowan

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 16, Post-office, Enoch).

Not unlike a number of the present residents of this township and county Mr. Rowan came originally from West Virginia, his birth occurring in Monroe county, of that State, August 18, 1836. His parents were also Virginians by birth, his father being Boston Rowan and his mother Frances (Givens) Rowan—each representative persons of the Old Dominion. Six children blessed their union. Of these James H. was brought up to a knowledge of agricultural life in Virginia, remaining there upwards of 33 years, when he moved to Kansas, locating there in 1869. Since 1880 he has been a resident of this county, occupied as before in attending to farm duties and the management of his well improved estate. He is the owner of 480 acres of land, underlying which is coal of superior quality, and besides this there is also upon this place excellent sandstone of good variety for building purposes. During the war Mr. Rowan took part in a number of battles in front of Richmond, the first and second battles of Manassas, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Winchester, Cloyd’s farm, Cedar Creek, and numerous others, his war experience being one of varied and thrilling interest. In June, 1877, Mr. R.’s marriage to Miss Lucy E. Whitelaw, of Tennessee, was consummated. Their family numbers six children: Drury, Louisa, Forcythe, Caperton, Edna and Lee Vir. Mr. Rowan and family are well respected by those who are favored with their acquaintance.
