HORACE RIPLEY

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 574:

Horace Ripley

(Farmer and Stock-feeder, Section 22, Post-office, Deerfield).

As one of the leading agriculturists and stock men of Coal township, Mr. Ripley is justly entitled to more than a passing consideration in the present work, his prominence in all matters of interest tending to the good of this section of the county rendering him well known. He is a Canadian by birth, though his parents, William H. And Alcena (Davidson) Ripley, were natives of this country, of New York State. Born on the 7th of August 1842, he was brought when only a year old by his father to Wisconsin, where he passed his youth and early manhood, growing up principally in Dane county. Upon the outbreak of the war he offered his services in defense of his adopted flag and became a member of the 7th Wisconsin infantry, serving with this command until being transferred to the 4th U. S. battery. During his military experience, which lasted some three years and three months, he participated in all the battles of importance of the Army of the Potomac, and after being mustered out returned to his home in Wisconsin. In 1873 Mr. Ripley was married to Miss Frances Hurlbut [Hurlburt], who was born in Indiana. Four children have been given them: Susan A., Jacob, Alva and Arthur. Mr. R. has been a resident of this county for almost 20 years, having come here in 1867. At this time he is the owner of 490 acres of land—a property which has been acquired through his own exertions, and this he is now managing with the wisdom and success which cannot fail of substantial results. Thoroughly understanding his business, he knows just what to do and how to do it—a feature of the calling which not every one can claim. In the stock industry especially he takes warm and active interest, considering this a fruitful source of agricultural labor.
