GEORGE WASHINGTON PITTS
George W. Pitts and his first wife, Ella Durham This is believed to be their wedding picture, taken about 1892 in Guthrie, Indian Territory
George Washington Pitts was born 22 August 1866, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, to John Harrison Pitts and Sarah Jane Cagley/Kegley. By 1892 George Pitts was living in the Indian Territory and married Ella Durham.
A son, Pleasant Harrison "Hap" Pitts was born to them on 2 Auguse 1893 in Mulhall, Indian Territory (later Logan County, Oklahoma).
Ella Durham Pitts died about October 1895, presumably where the family was living near Mulhall, and was buried in an unmarked grave "under a big tree near a river." No additional information is known about Ella Durham.
Following Ella's death, George Pitts returned to Vernon County, Missouri and purchased land in Harrison Township where in 1900 he was living and farmed. He then married Anna "Annie" Josephine Mullen on 23 December 1902 in Nevada, Missouri. She was the daughter of Andrew "Andy" James Mullen and Elizabeth Watts.
Children of the 2nd marriage:
Elmer (NMN) Pitts was born 29 May 1905 and married Alice Leatherman 14 February 1934.
Sarah Ellen Pitts was born 16 November 1908 and married Fred Lakin, Vernon Co., MO.
Mary Belle Pitts married Clarence Leslie Lewis, Ft. Scott, KS.
George Eugene Pitts was born 28 January 1916 and married Elinor Mary Nansel, Denver, Colorado. George Pitts was born about two weeks after his father's death.
George Washington Pitts died 11 January 1916, from complications after having been kicked in the chest by a horse. He is buried at McKill Chapel Cemetery, near Bronaugh, Vernon County Missouri. His wife Anna died in 1934 and is buried beside him. (Find A Grave photo provided by "Big John 46634520" and used with permission.)
