OZEM B. NICHOLS

Ozem B. Nichols

(Farmer and Plasterer, Section 36, Post-Office, Milo).

   About seven miles southeast of Nevada and on the southwest quarter of section 36 is located the pleasant homestead of Mr. Nichols, where he is occupied in following his chosen calling of farming, in connection with jobs of plastering, a trade with which he is perfectly familiar.  His home place is convenient and nicely arranged and kept in good order.  Mr. N. was born in Carlyle, Clinton county, Ill., April 9, 1843, the son of Ozem B. and Sarah (Claybaugh) Nichols, and was the fourth of their nine children.  His father was a native of New York but became located in Illinois in 1835; his mother came originally from Indiana county, Pa.  Ozem B., Jr., was the son of a farmer and most naturally grew up to a knowledge of a farmer's life, but his uneventful youth was disturbed in 1861 by the mutterings of war, heeding which he enlisted in the 111th Illinois infantry, Co. I, and took part in the battle of Decatur Junction, Resaca, Ga., and all the engagements on the march to Atlanta, where he was disabled by receiving a wound.  Upon having sufficiently recovered he rejoined his regiment, at Newberne, N. C., remaining with it until the close of the war, and witnessing the surrender of Johnston to Sherman.  Upon his return home Mr. Nichols engaged in the plastering trade and for 20 years was occupied in this industry.  In August, 1880, he became a citizen of this county and here he has since remained, owning a good tract of land of 163 1/3 acres.  This he manages in a manner far above reproach.  All his methods are carried on successfully, and among his fellow-citizens he is well known and highly esteemed.  His worthy wife was formerly Miss Hannah Elmyra Allison, whom he married October 26, 1865.  She was born in Indiana county, Pa., and is a lady of admirable social qualities and refinement of manner.  When 14 years old she located at Carlyle, Ill., where she met Mr. Nichols.  Six children are in their family:  James S., Ozem C., Walter A., William B., Sarah O. and Lottie M.  Mr. and Mrs. N. are members of the Presbyterian Church.
