JOHN S. MILLER

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 896:

John S. Miller

(Farmer, Section 16, Post-office, Temple).

John S. Miller, who for seventeen years has been a resident of Vernon county, was born in Seneca county, O., January 26, 1838.  His father, Solomon Miller, and his mother, whose maiden name was Lydia Smith, were both natives of Maryland.  There were fourteen children in their family and of these John S. was the seventh child.  He was reared in Ohio on a farm and has always followed this occupation, and Vernon county has not a more neat , thorough or prudent farmer within her borders.  He came here in 1870 and owns 160 acres (four acres devoted to orchard) of land in a high state of cultivation.  He married Miss Nancy J. Garber in 1866.  She was born in Ohio.  They have seven children:  Herchel J., Marion F., Albert W., Hervey S., Clara A., Maud E., Orrin J.  The improvements upon his farm have all been made by Mr. Miller.  He is a man of retiring disposition but affable and courteous in manner—a man of high principle and esteemed for his uprightness and integrity.  Deviation from the strict line of rectitude out of the charity of his heart he might pardon in others, but permits nothing of the kind himself.
