ALBERT McGOVNEY

Albert McGovney

(Ex-treasurer of Vernon County, Nevada).

   Mr. McGovney has recently filled his second term as county treasurer, a position to which he was first elected in 1882 and afterwards in 1884.  Though brought up a a farmer, he later began a mercantile experience, and by his upright business transactions and straigthforward conduct, so secured the confidence of the public that he was soon called to occupy the responsible position of treasurer --- a testimonial which shows how well he stands in the county, and an honor that he warmly deserved.  Albert McGovney was born in Adams county, O., February 18, 1852.  John McGovney, his father, was also a native of the Buckeye State, a farmer by occupation; and after coming to this county in 1871 he became an agriculturist of Badger township, remaining there until his recent removal to Greenwood county, Kas., in March, 1886.  His wife was formerly Miss Rebecca Holmes, also of Adams county, O., and she bore her husband six children, of whom Albert was the fourth child and third son.  The latter has been twice married.  In November, 1881, Miss May L. Pitcher, a native of New York, became his wife, but she died March 10, 1882.  In June, 1885, Mr. McGovney married Miss Sallie Thornburg, of St. Louis, whose death he was called upon to mourn on the 29th of January, 1886.  He is quite prominent in Masonic circles and belongs to the Blue Lodge, Chapter and Commandery of that order at this place.
