JOHN A. MAY
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 668 John A. May (Of Nevada Tobacco Works). Among the many branches of business of which Nevada may well feel proud her tobacco interests should not be forgotten or overlooked. The only firm engaged exclusively in the manufacture of plug, chewing and smoking tobacco at this point is that of the Nevada Tobacco Works, whose business since its establishment here has increased wonderfully, until at this time its product is sold extensively in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and the Indian Territory, though the sales are not confined alone to these districts. The different brands which are made are excelled by none and the best proof of the quality of the manufacture is seen in the wide use given them. The factory is managed by John A. May, an experienced man in this business. Mr. May was brought up to a knowledge of this industry, having been reared and educated in St. Charles, Mo., where he was born February 28, 1846. His parents were Pinkney M. and Mary E. May (whose maiden name was Chambers), the latter a native of St. Charles county, Mo. The father was born in North Carolina, but became located in St. Charles county at an early day, from whence he subsequently moved to Johnson county, his present place of residence. John A. was the eldest son and second child of five children. After reaching manhood he was married May 22, 1873, to Miss Leona Savage, of the same county as himself. They have two children: Ella and Nellie. A lifetime passed in following his present business is certainly assurance that Mr. May understands his trade. His annual sales will reach a large figure. |
