WALTER F. LEWIS

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 660:

Walter F. Lewis

(Dealer in Boots, Shoes, Etc., Nevada).

Mr. Lewis has been established in business at Nevada only since 1885, but sufficient time has elapsed to give him a substantial standing as a representative business man.  He was born in Ray county, Mo., August 23, 1846, and is now, therefore, 40 years of age.  Edward A. Lewis, his father, well known to the residents of the eastern portion of the State, was a Virginian by birth, and in 1842 located in Missouri; he now occupies the position as presiding judge of the Court of Appeals at St. Louis -- an official distinction to which his ability justly entitles him.  At one time he was a supreme judge of Missouri.  His reputation as a jurist and his career while on the bench have contributed to place him prominently in the front rank of Missouri's talented citizens.  The mother of the subject of this sketch was formerly Miss Parthenia A. Bransford, of Kentucky nativity.  Walter F., the eldest child and son in a family of six children, was brought up in St. Louis from the age of four years, his first business experience being as bookkeeper in a bank, after which he was in the employ of a wholesale tobacco house for some time.  Later he embarked in the shoe trade, and this branch of business has continued to receive his attention to the present.  Part of his career in this line was in a wholesale establishment, after which he traveled on the road quite extensively, gaining a thorough knowledge of the business.  The stock which he now carries in this store is second to none, being large and complete, comprising goods of the best manufacture; all articles are sold at figures as low as the lowest, and the result is a satisfactory patronage is accorded him.  May 23, 1872, Mr. Lewis was married to Miss M. F. Chase, a native of St. Louis.  Four children have been given them:  George C., Florence P., Fannie D. and Susan C.  Mr. L. is a member of the I. O. O. F.
