J. B. LATIMER

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 659-660:

J. B. Latimer

(Of The Dry Goods Regulator; Dealer in Dry Goods, Cloaks, Carpets, etc., Nevada).

From his first settlement in this county up to February, 1886, Mr. Latimer was engaged with Mr. J. F. Harber in the dry goods business, a capacity in which he gained a popular acquaintance.  Last June he purchased of J. S. Clack the establishment known as the Regulator, and this he has since conducted.  The previous excellent reputation which this store enjoyed under its former proprietor is fully sustained in its present management, for to his general knowledge of the business Mr. Latimer brings an experience in merchandising of almost a lifetime.  He was reared in his native State -- Kentucky -- and when a boy entered upon a mercantile career that his since continued.  It was in the fall of 1881 that he became a citizen of Nevada, and consequently he has been identified with the city's interest for some five years.  J. B. Latimer was born in Boyle county, Ky., at Perryville, June 16, 1851.  His father, John B. H. Latimer, was also a Kentuckian by birth; his occupation was that of a merchant.  His wife was formerly Miss Elizabeth Parks, whose father was the founder of the town of Parksville, Ky., in which State she too was born.  The subject of this sketch was the third of eight children.  In 1871, he was married to Miss Ada Harber, then of Washington county, Ky., but a native of Madison county, and a daughter of D. M. Harber.  Their family numbers four children:  Florence, Leland B., John Morris and Bessie.
