RICHARD C. JONES

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 652-653:

Richard C. Jones

(Of R. C. Jones & Co., Proprietors of the Gem City Music Store, Dealers in Pianos, Organs, Musical Merchandise, etc., Nevada).

Richard C. Jones, the subject of this sketch, was born in Devonshire, England, July 18, 1840, but when 11 years old he left that country for America, arriving in New York during the year 1851. His father, Philip Jones, died in England, but his mother, whose name before marriage was Mary Ann Lovering, is still living at the advanced age of 80 years, well preserved in years and active in mind and body; she finds a pleasant home among her children. Richard C. after settling in the United States grew up principally in Erie county, N. Y., learning the drug trade. For several years he traveled throughout the West in the interest first of a Buffalo wholesale house and afterwards for a New York establishment, but upon coming to Nevada he embarked in his present business in March, 1885, a business which has achieved such proportions as leaves no doubt in the minds of those most skeptical as to the reliability of this house. Besides dealing in musical instruments he also carries a well selected stock of sewing machines, a branch in which he enjoys a good trade. Pianos of six different manufactures are handled by him and organs of twelve kinds are to be found, the stock also embracing everything usually to be found in a representative music store. Mr. Jones enjoys an extensive patronage through this and surrounding counties, and by his mode of business has gained a large acquaintance, a large amount of business being conducted through solicitors. His wife was formerly Miss Elizabeth P. Lock, of Alton, Ill., who has become the mother of three children: Russell, Kenneth and Homer. Mr. Jones is a member of the Masonic and K. of P. Orders and also belongs to the G.A.R.  During the war he was a member of the U. S. navy, North Atlantic blockade squadron; for three days in succession he was under fire at City Point.
