JOSEPH J. JOHNSON

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 733:

Joseph J. Johnson

(Proprietor of Livery Stable, Schell City).

Perhaps the most recent addition to the business interests of Schell City is the one now carried on by Mr. Johnson, who has only been a citizen of the place since last year.  But even in this short time he has demonstrated his worth as a man and citizen, and in the conduct of his livery stable has shown himself popular and accommodating to his patrons.  Mr. Johnson came originally from Bowling Green, Ky., a locality famous for the quality of its fine stock, particularly horses.  His birth occurred January 19, 1830, the youngest but one of thirteen children in the family of his parents, Benjamin C. and Catharine B. (Curd) Johnson.  The father was a Virginian by birth, subsequently removing from that State to Kentucky, and in 1830 to Marion county, Mo., where he and his family became prominently identified with the interests of that community.  His worthy wife was born in Jessamine county, Ky.  Joseph J., the subject of this sketch, was reared to manhood upon a farm in Marion county, and enjoyed excellent educational advantages; supplementing the common school instruction which he received with an attendance at Bethany College, Va.  Upon leaving school he engaged in the drug business at Palmyra and also at Hannibal, remaining so occupied for eighteen years, when he turned his attention to the real estate business, trading and farming.  Remaining there until 1886, Mr. Johnson then came to this place, where his career has since been well known.  November 25, 1863, he was married to Miss Matilda J. Helm, daughter of Hon. John B. Helm, of Hannibal, Mo.  Her father is one of the representative citizens of Marion county and highly esteemed for his influence and worth.
