GRANVILLE S. HOSS

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 645-646:

Granville S. Hoss

(Attorney at Law, Nevada).

Mr. Hoss is descended from an old Tennessee family by that name, though he himself was born and reared in Missouri.  His father, Samuel Hoss, of Tennessee, located in this State about 1840 and devoted himself to agricultural pursuits.  He is now a resident of California.  His wife, formerly Miss Almeda Snell, was originally from Monroe county, Mo.  Eight children were in their family and of these Granville, the third son and fourth child, was born October 29, 1850, in Pettis county.  His early youth was spent at home in attending to the duties of the farm, and also as a student at the common schools, his primary course of instruction being supplemented by an attendance at Westminster College, Fulton, Mo.  Having ably fitted himself for the study of law in the office of Judge C. R. Scott, he began preparation for the bar, prosecuting his studies with such diligence that he was admitted to practice in 1874.  Since that time he has closely applied himself to the prosecution of his chosen calling, and though still a young man he has already established himself honorably in life.  From 1878 to 1882 he served this county as its prosecuting attorney, proving himself faithful and efficient in the discharge of his official duties.  On October 10, 1883, Mr. Hoss was united in marriage with Miss Julia McBride, whose native place was in Monroe county, Mo.  Their only son and child is Granville S.  Mr. Hoss belongs to the Masonic Lodge at this place and is a Knight Templar in that Order.
