JOSHUA T. HIGHTOWER

Joshua T. Hightower

(Farmer, Section 33, Post-office, Walker)

   Any person at all acquainted with the history of Blue Mound township is familiar with the name of Hightower--a  name borne by its first settler, Joshua Hightower, the father of the subject of this sketch, and a man to whom frequent mention has necessarily been made in other portions of his work.  His son, Joshua T., a worthy descendant of such an illustrious father, was born in Camden county, Mo., June 8, 1851, and as he grew up became accustomed to manual labor upon the home farm, both by theory and practice.  Facilities for attending school at that time were limited in certain sections, and his first instruction was received in a private school taught by a Mrs. Hall, who lived a short distance south of the present site of the Dodson school-house; subsequently he attended there and also the Howard school-house, built in 1857, being a pupil at the first term taught by James German, a man of good education and now a Christian minister.  Though but 10 years old when the Civil War broke out Mr. H. remembers distinctly many incidents which occurred during that memorable struggle, the family undergoing severe losses from the depredations of Kansas jayhawkers and other ruffians.  February 28, 1877, he was married to Miss Susan Combs, of Cass county, Mo., who has borne him four children; Ennis C., Dixie A., Lula B. and Nellie P.  Mr. Hightower's farm of 90 acres is receiving splendid attention and indicates him to be a thorough agriculturist in every sense of the term.  His political preferences are Democratic.
