Richard S. Griggs Died Last Friday

     Richard S. Griggs died Friday at 8:40 o'clock p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. A. Davis, one and one half miles northwest of Metz.  The remains were buried in the G. A. R. lot in Balltown cemetery Sunday at 11 o'clock.  He had been ill for many months with bright's disease and for more than a year had been confined to his bed.

     Richard Struble Griggs was born near Cleveland, Ohio, March 13, 1839, and at his death was aged 77 years, 9 months and 29 days.  He enlisted as a private in the Union forces during the Civil war in Co. G, 5th Missouri regiment, cavalry, and served until the close of the great conflict.  On March 25, 1866, he was married to Eliza Jane Rhodes.  Three children were born to them--Mrs. H. A. Davis, who resides here, Mrs. John F. Padgett of Des Moines, Ia., and Maggie Ellen Griggs, the last named being dead.  The wife and mother died forty-four years ago.  Deceased is also survived by four grandchildren.  Uniting with the Protestant Methodist church as Osceola, Ia., many years ago, he continued in the christian faith until the end.  He was a member of the Grand Army Post at Nevada, but on account of bad weather the members could not conduct the funeral services.
