From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 501

Tolbert T. Gates

(Proprietor of Gates House and Livery, Walker)

Thomas T. Gates was born in Morgan county, Mo., May 1, 1844.  His father, Stephenson Gates, a native of Kentucky and a farmer by occupation, came to Morgan county, Mo., at an early day and lived there until his death.  The maiden name of his mother. who was born in Kentucky , was Elizabeth Chisholm; she died in 1879 in Moniteau county, Mo.  There were eight children born to them, Tolbert T. being the seventh.  He was reared in his native county until thirteen years of age, and then removed with his parents to Vernon county and settled in Henry township, and was familiar with many of the incidents that occurred during the border troubles between Missouri and Kansas.  At the outbreak of the war, being less than seventeen years of age, he enlisted in the first regiment of Missouri troops for the Confederate army, and participated in the battles of Carthage, Oak Hill, Lexington, Pea Ridge, Farmington, Miss.; Iuka, Grand Gulf, Champion's Hill and siege of Vicksburg; at the latter place he was taken prisoner and this terminated his military career.  After leaving the army he went up the Missouri river to Montana territory, and engaged in mining, which occupation he continued two years with satisfactory results and then returned to Missouri and settled in Moniteau County, and December 5, 1867, married Miss Mildred C. Newkirk, who was born in that county.  Mr. Gates engaged in agricultural pursuits which he followed in this county until 1874, when he removed to Vernon county, and after farming six years became proprietor of the Gates House, Walker, and since that time he has been engaged in the hotel and livery business, an occupation for which he is eminently fitted, and his many social qualities, combined with his kind and obliging treatment of patrons, has secured him a substantial patronage.  His family, besides his wife, consists of five children:  Hattie O., Willie R., Jennie D., Mamie T. and Elton Lee. He is a member of the A. O. U. W.
