CORNELIUS GALVIN

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 468-469:

Cornelius Galvin

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 33, Post-office, Goodrick)

When Mr. Galvin first located in Vernon county in the spring of 1866 he bought the old Procter farm, in section 33, Virgil township, upon which was a house of real historical importance, and it might be of interest to refer to that structure in this brief article.  During Price’s last raid through Missouri, upon one occasion when night overtook him and his soldiers he camped in the vicinity of this farm and in person occupied the house.  A few nights later Federal soldiers also made use of the same building, but before leaving carried away both the doors and windows and destroyed some of the rails, together with the orchard.  Mr. Galvin lived in this place for a number of years but finally moved to his present location, where he owns 160 acres of land, well improved and in excellent cultivation.  As an early settler in this county he can relate with interest many anecdotes and reminiscences connected with pioneer times here.  Cornelius Galvin was born in County Limerick, Ireland, March 25, 1829, his parents, John and Mary (Mahar) Galvin, also being natives of this country, where they subsequently died.  When less than five years old young Cornelius emigrated for America October 20, 1833, and on Christmas eve landed at New Orleans, from whence he went a month later to Mason county, Ky., where he was reared and educated.  June 10, 1850, Miss Sarah J. Painter, of Bourbon county, Ky., became his wife, her birth having occurred November 6, 1833.  She was the daughter of William (of Virginia) and Alice Painter, nee Becket (of Kentucky).  After his marriage Mr. G. settled in Nicholas (now Robinson) county, Ky., but November 4, 1856, moved to Clay county, Mo., and thence in 1861 to Platte county, coming to this county, as before stated, March 17, 1866.  Mr. and Mrs. Galvin have the following children:  John W., born April 16, 1853; Thomas H., born January 13, 1855; Mary Alice, born October 13, 1857; Robert E., born August 27, 1859; Cornelius O. and Sarah M., born February 27, 1862; George B. McC., and Lizzie, born June 1, 1864; Nannie Bell, born February 3, 1866; Joseph Alexander, born December 3, 1868, and Benjamin F., born October 13, 1870.
