ALBERT EVANS

The 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 487-488:

Albert Evans

(Farmer, Section 33, Post-Office, Nevada).

He whose name heads this sketch was born in Licking county, 0., December 21, 1827, his parents, Joshua and Elizabeth Evans, nee Radcliff, having been natives of Loudoun county, Va.  The father was of Welsh descent and the mother of English origin, and for three years the former served as a soldier in the War of 1812.  He participated in several terrible battles, including the engagement at Raisin river, and was also at the surrender of Detroit, his commander being Col. Lewis Cass.  After returning from the battlefield he located in Licking county, 0., and continued to till the soil there until 1830 when he moved to what is now Marshall county, Ill., which was his home for many years.  His death occurred January 15, 1869, but his wife had preceded him to the grave in 1843.  There were nine children by their marriage, two of whom died in infancy.  Of those living Albert, the fourth child, passed his childhood and youth about the home place, though there were none but inferior subscription schools for him to attend, and these were in old-time log buildings, with puncheon floors, etc., very different from the modern structures.  Yet he managed to acquire the rudiments of an English education.  His first start in life was as a farmer in Marshall county, Ill., and there he continued to give his attention to agricultural pursuits until 1866, when, going to Wenona, he engaged in building and the lumber business.  In 1879 he again located on his Marshall county homestead and remained there up to the time of his settlement in Vernon county, Mo., in the spring of 1884.  He has since lived near Nevada and has improved his place in a manner which strongly indicates the intelligent, progressive agriculturist which all concede him to be.  The reputation which he enjoys is certainly very flattering to his personal popularity, and all admit that he deserves his success.  April 4, 1855, Mr.. Evans was married to Miss Harriet Springer, of Illinois, a relative of Congressman Springer, of that State.  The fruits of this union are six children: Winslow, an attorney of Lacon, Ill.; Ella, at home; Lincoln, a farmer of Center township; Charles E., a salesman in Nevada; Belle, wife of Frank Wright, of Illinois; and Addie M., at home.  Mr. E. is a Republican in politics and has held several positions of trust and honor , among others those of assessor for twelve years, school treasurer thirty years and eleven years justice of the peace, supervisor, etc., --abundant testimonial as to his fitness for public preferment.
