Robert T. Ellis

   There are a number of men within the limits of Vernon county besides Mr. Ellis who are closely approaching the allotted age of three score years and ten, but as all will admit, there is no one more universally honored or of greater personal worth than he.  This is a statement of well-known truth.  About the first of November, 1866, he came to Vernon county, and some four years later his recognized ability and qualifications for the position led to his election as county judge.  He has also discharged the duties of justice of the peace, filling most acceptably these official positions.  His private life has been as upright as his public career.  An earnest, consistent Christian, for many years he has been a deacon in the Baptist Church, and has contributed liberally towards the development of different religious movements.  At present he resides upon his nicely improved farm of 408 acres—a body of land which is perhaps unexcelled, naturally, for general farming purposes; this is conducted in a manner which secures the best results for the labor expended.  Mr. Ellis was born in Barren county, Ky., December 16, 1817.  His parents were Eleazer and Jane Ellis, both Virginians by birth, and of their seven children Robert T. was the youngest.  He grew up in his native State, after which in 1840 he came to Missouri, settling in Macon county, where he was also identified with the interests of the county in an official capacity.  In 1858 and 1859 he served as sheriff, and later on was made justice of the peace, though his attention principally was directed to the chosen channels of farm life.  Towards the close of the year 1866, as stated, he associated himself with the affairs of this county.  In 1838 Mr. Ellis was united in marriage with Miss Virgin Mary Ford, a native of Barren county, Ky., who died in October, 1848, leaving two children:  John E. and Frances J.  His second marriage occurred in February 1849, when Miss Nancy Jane Dale, of Randolph county, Mo., became his wife.  Ten children have been born of this union:  William H., Martha J., wife of William C. Pryor; Robert L., Julia A., wife of Zechariah Walter; Stephen A., Idress A., wife of I. S. Conner; Abram T., George T., Emma R. and Cassendany.
