DEATH COMES TO R. C. ELDER

102-Year Old Veteran Of Civil War Is Dead

     R. C. Elder, Civil War veteran and former resident of Harwood, who in June celebrated his 102nd birthday anniversary, died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Herman Elder, near Walker, where he had lived the past several years.

     Mr. Elder was born June 4, 1844, in Ohio.  When 20 years old he enlisted for service in the Civil War at Little Rock, Ark, and until his death Mr. Elder held the reputation of being the only Civil War veteran in the county.  A private in Company H, Sixth regiment, of the Missouri Infantry, he received his discharge Aug. 17, 1865.

     On June 20, 1871, he was married to Augusta Hill at California, Mo., and nine children were born to the couple before Mrs. Elder died on March 10, 1887.  His only surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Sheldon of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Mary Zimmerman of California, Mo., and several grandchildren.

     On Oct. 30, 1892, at Rinehart, Mr. Elder was married to Susan Owen, who died on July 21, 1933.  Three years later he married Mary Price.

     Moving to Vernon county in 1906 Mr. Elder farmed and operated a sawmill.  He moved to the Harwood community in 1932.

     Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church in Harwood and burial will be at the Harwood cemetery.  The Waggoner Funeral home in Harwood will be in charge of services.

Last Civil War Veteran Passed On

     Funeral services for R. C. Elder, who died in Harwood Sunday, December 8, at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Callie Elder, a sister of Boyd Maddox of Metz, were held Tuesday afternoon, December 10, at the Christian church in Harwood.

     Mr. Elder was 102 years old and was Vernon county's last Civil war veteran.
