AUGUST DIEHR

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 588-589:

August Diehr

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 21, T 35, R 31, Post-office, Nevada).

Mr. Diehr, who has made himself one of the substantial, successful agriculturists of this portion of the county by his own industry and perseverance, and strict adherence to the chosen channels of farm life, is a native of Missouri and was born in St. Charles county, January 3, 1837. His father, George Diehr, came originally from Germany, but when August was a young boy, he died. The son was also deprived of a mother’s watchful care by death, and thus left in an early day without the guidance and tender care of both parents, he deserves to an unusual extent credit and commendation for having reached his present position in life. Brought up in his native county on a farm, he has ever followed this occupation. In 1868 he first commenced to improve the place which he now occupies, but it was not until 1870 that he moved his family upon it. This farm embraces altogether 410 acres, and upon it is a most valuable stone quarry that is now being developed, situated on the Nevada and Minden Branch of the M. P. R. R., two miles south of Nevada, and which thus far shows an excel-quality of stone. Mr. Diehr is also engaged in the raising of stock. The improvements upon his homestead are deserving of mention, for all his buildings are models of neatness and convenience. In the conduct of his place he is ably assisted by his worthy wife, to whom no little is due for the part she has borne in obtaining this property. Mrs. Diehr was formerly Miss Margaret B. Harney, of St. Charles, Mo., a relative of Gen. Harney, of military fame. Their marriage was consummated in 1859, and to them four children have been given: Oscar N., Alvah B., Isabelle and Mina A.
