Mt. McGregor Post No. 252, Grand Army of the Republic Burial Lot Balltown Cemetery, Horton, Vernon County, Missouri
Special ceremony honors Civil War soldier A long-lost Civil War soldier will be remembered in an elaborate ceremony at Balltown Cemetery, near Horton, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Hiram Davis enlisted in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry under an assumed name. When he died of disease while stationed at Balltown with his unit, he was buried under the assumed name and a marker erected bearing that name. In recent years, Herb and Gordon Davis of Denver, Colo., remote descendants of Hiram Davis, found out the true facts in the diary of Capt. C. W. Porter, in command at Balltown at the time. They located the diary in archives in Wisconsin. A new veteran's marker, bearing the correct name, was ordered and has been installed at the grave. Arranged by Arnold Schofield, historian at Fort Scott National Historic site, the commemoration ceremony will include a procession, posting of the colors, call to attention, national anthem, invocation by the Rev. Wilham Hurtig of Fort Scott, remarks by Herb and Gordon Davis, a floral tribute, a riderless horse with stirrups reversed, and retreat of the colors and taps. The military rituals will be performed by the color detail from the historic site and reenactors from the Missouri Civil War Reenactors Association, commanded by Lt. John Macki, The event should last half an hour and will be held regardless of the weather. The public is welcome. The Nevada Daily Mail, Nevada, Missouri; Friday 18 September 1992 page 3
