ALFRED H. DAVIS

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 864-865:

Alfred H. Davis

(Of the Firm of Davis & Co., Dealers in General Merchandise, Montevallo).

The firm of which the subject of this sketch is a member is composed of A. H. Davis and C. P. Barnes, men who rank well as merchants, while as citizens, and in commercial affairs, no word of reproach has ever been uttered against them.  Mr. Davis was born in Mercer county, Ky., December 13, 1852.  His father, Commodore Perry Davis, was also a Kentuckian by birth, and after moving to Kentucky lived for a time in Ralls county, from whence in 1848 he went to Mercer county.  The maiden name of Alfred’s mother was Louisa Elza, originally from Virginia.  Thirteen constituted the family, of whom young Alfred was the sixth.  He was reared in his native county upon a farm, learning as he grew up the minute details of agricultural labor, and while not thus occupied he attended school, obtaining a good common school education.  His home continued to be in Mercer county until 1879, but in that year he chose a location in Vernon county, and here he has since remained.  He was closely occupied in attending to his chosen avocation until 1883, when he embarked in mercantile pursuits, and in this capacity he has built up a reputation which does him credit.  The firm carries a good stock of general merchandise, well selected and such as meets the wants of its many customers, and goods are sold on their merits at as reasonable figures as can be afforded, Messrs. Davis & Co. striving to make it an object that every customer may consider them their friend.  In 1873 Mr. D. was united in marriage with Miss Salena Wakefield, who was born in Iowa.  They have four children: James R., Alva, Johnnie and Orval.  One daughter is deceased.  Mr. Davis is a member of the I. O. O. F.  It should have been mentioned that his father became a citizen of this county in 1877 and still resides here, but his mother died in 1882.
