LAWRENCE DALY

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 634:

Lawrence Daly

(Nevada).

Mr. Daly, prominently connected with the brick manufacturing interests of Nevada and vicinity, is a member of two firms –Daly, Hartley & Daly, who are the brick contractors for the new Insane Asylum, now in process of construction, and Daly & Hartley.  He owes his nativity to Fayette county, Ky., his natal day having been September 10, 1823.  Loren Daly, his father, was also born in that county, and during the War of 1812 held a captain’s commission.  While in the service he was captured by the enemy, but escaped; a large lumber of the regiment with which he was connected were massacred at the battle of River Raisin.  His death occurred in in Louisiana in 1871.  His wife, formerly Miss Ann Beard, of Kentucky also, became the mother of ten children, five of whom were sons, and of these Lawrence was the youngest.  Five of the children still survive.  Young Daly grew up in the knowledge of farm life, though later on he served an apprenticeship at the brick laying business, a calling to which he has devoted himself for 40 years.  Upon coming to Missouri in 1874, he settled in Boone county, engaged at once in his adopted avocation, and for 13 years has followed the manufacture of brick.  He contracted for the brick work on the Insane Asylum at Fulton, Mo., and during his residence in Vernon county has done a large part of the brick work here, especially in and about Nevada.  Since 1880 he has been associated with Mr. Hartley, mention of whom appears elsewhere in this work.  Mr. Daly, with his partners, is now occupied in manufacturing brick for Insane Asylum No. 3, a contract by no means a small one.  He is also a property holder, owning 80 acres of good land within the corporation.  In 1867 Mr. Daly was married to Miss Irene Daly, a native of Mississippi.  They have one child, Belle.  Mr. D. is connected with the Masonic Order.
