The 1900 Richland Township, Vernon County, Missouri census shows that Newton Chase was born April 1844 in Illinois and was a farmer.  His wife, Minnie, was born April 1861 in Iowa, and four of five children born to her were living at that time. Their children were all born in Kansas: 19-year-old Rolla M., born January 1881; 15-year-old Maurice W., born August 1884; 13-year-old Achsah E., born April 1887; and 7-year-old Ester G., born April 1893. Also living in the household is Herman Capps, a 21-year-old border, born October 1878 in Kansas, a farm laborer.

The 1903 Vernon County, Missouri Plat Map shows that the N. Chase property was located in Township 36 North, Range 33 West, Section 30, which places it on the Missouri-Kansas border in Richland Township, Vernon County, Missouri.

In the 1895 Bourbon County, Kansas state census, this family was living in Scott Township.
