OLIVER K. CALDWELL

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 901-902:

Oliver K. Caldwell

(Cashier of the Citizens' Bank, Nevada).

He whose name heads this sketch first saw the light in Lewis county, Mo., March 19, 1843, being the son of John P. Caldwell, a native of Bath county, Ky., who, when a boy, accompanied his father to Ralls county, Mo. In 1840 he (John) became settled in Lewis county, where he afterwards took active and prominent interest in the commercial, political and social affairs of the community, securing unasked wide and substantial influence. He served as sheriff and collector of that county, and at this time still resides there, largely interested in milling. His wife was formerly Miss Elvira Reddish. Oliver K. was the second of 13 children in his parents' family. As he grew towards manhood, in the county of his birth, he was taught the milling business, and also the occupation of wool carding, his time while not thus occupied being spent in attending school. After a number of years devoted to this calling Mr. Caldwell went to New London, Ralls county, where he embarked in banking, but in 1883 he came to Nevada and assisted in the organization of the Citizens' Bank at this place. Since then he has been in the bank in the capacity of cashier, proving himself to be a most thorough and efficient, as well as popular, official. As elsewhere stated this bank, though established but four years, ranks as one of the most reliable and conservative institutions in Southwest Missouri -- a reputation due not a little to Mr. Caldwell's business judgment and financial ability and knowledge. It goes without saying that the public have in him the most thorough confidence -- both in his personal and business honor and integrity. Mr. C. married Miss Mary A. Sterrett, who was also born in Lewis county, Mo., and to them five children have been born: Emasue, Paul H., Mary L., Robert E., and an infant unnamed. Mr. C. is a member of the A. O. U. W., in which he is a Select Knight. He and his wife are prominent members and liberal supporters of the Christian Church.
