J. M. BELL

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 415:

J. M. Bell

(Notary Public and Justice of the Peace, Post-office, Hoover.)

The subject of this sketch is a native Missourian, and a man sincerely esteemed by those among whom he has for a number of years resided. Since 1874 he has made his home in this county, and during this time he has been accorded a position of substantial worth and influence by the persons best qualified to judge of his character and ability. Born at Fulton, Callaway county, Mo., August 8, 1832, he came of Virginia antecedents, his parents both having been born in the Old Dominion. William Bell, his father, was a farmer by occupation, and one of the early settlers of Callaway county, his location there occurring in 1831. The maiden name of the mother was Miss Nancy Vineyard. Young Bell was the seventh of twelve children. When young he accompanied the family to Cole county, Mo., and there was reared to manhood, passing his time like other youths of the community and obtaining a good education. He was residing there at the time of his marriage, August 12, 1857, when Miss Juan Norfleet, a Kentuckian by birth, became his wife; she was the daughter of Larkin Norfleet. Some time after this event Mr. Bell removed to Miller county, but in 1874, as stated above, he settled upon the site of his present home, where he is meeting with the success which he richly deserves. For eight years he has discharged the duties of notary public and justice of the peace with satisfaction and credit. He now belongs to the Masonic Order. Mr. Bell and wife have four children: DeWitt C., Sophronia, wife of George A. Pemberton; Viola, at school, and Vincil B.
