BURKE BARTON

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 619:

Burke Barton

(Carpenter and Joiner, Nevada).

The subject of this sketch was born in Rutherford county, Tenn., January 23, 1855, and is, therefore in his thirty-second year.  His parents were Simfield H. and Mary J. (Barnes) Barton, also natives of Tennessee, and the parents of seven children, of whom Burke was the fourth child.  In 1862 the father moved his family to Illinois and there, in the Southern part of the State, the son was reared to manhood, naturally acquiring a thorough knowledge of farm life from his father, who was a farmer by calling.  Later on and while still in Illinois Burke learned the trade which he still follows – that of carpenter and joiner, and in which he has done well.  Since 1881 he has been a resident of Nevada, and here he has applied himself industriously to his chosen occupation, working his way quietly and steadily, but with a skill that speaks for itself.  July 10, 1886, Mr. Barton married Miss Elva E. Leach, of Potter county, Pa., originally, but daughter of Charles and Katie Ellen Leach, formerly Wright, the father of Steuben county, N.Y., and the latter, of Ogdensburg, same State.  Mrs. Leach was born November 24, 1835, her parents being John T. and Mary K. (Ives) Wright, both natives of New York; she was one of three children.  Mrs. Barton’s parents were married in Allegany county, N. Y., December 15, 1850, and located where they now live in Montevallo township in April, 1869.  They had nine children, five of whom are now deceased.  Mrs. L. died at her home in 1886.  Mr. Barton is a member of the I. O. O. F.
