DANIEL H. AUSTIN

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 383:

Daniel H. Austin

In the year 1836, Daniel H. Austin, one of the missionaries at the Harmony Mission, removed to this county with his family, one of whose members was his son, Josiah, and settled half a mile east of Balltown.  He built the first mill in Vernon county.  It was a water mill and Austin afterwards sold it to Cecil D. Ball, the founder of Balltown, who came in the year 1837 and reconstructed it, as noted elsewhere in this chapter.

Daniel Austin and Daniel H. Austin

Daniel Austin (1793-1875) of Vernon County, Missouri should not to be confused with the Daniel H. Austin (1778-1852) of Harmony Mission who moved to Vernon County after Harmony Mission closed.  Both Austin's can be found in the 1850 census of Bates county.

Daniel Austin was a veteran of the War of 1812, including the Battle of New Orleans as his pension application, a part of which is included below, testifies.  He was the father of Thomas H. Austin, for whom Austin Blvd. in Nevada was named.  Thomas Austin's biography can be found in both editions (1887 and 1911) of The History of Vernon County, Missouri with mention of his father Daniel.

From an Austin researcher:  I am not aware of any living descendants of Daniel Austin in Vernon county, though there may be through his son Samuel or one of the daughters.  Thomas H. Austin’s children all died in childhood.  I descend through Daniel's second son, William A. Austin, whose wife was the sister of Thomas's wife.
